For the benefit of all farmers, gardeners and consumers who want an alternative, we pledge that we do not knowingly buy or sell genetically engineered seeds or plants. We must protect this foundation as a safe and genetically stable source for future generations. “Agriculture and seeds provide the basis upon which our lives depend. To date, over 370 seed companies worldwide have signed the pledge. In 1999, High Mowing Organic Seeds led a coalition to draft a statement about their stance on genetic engineering. The symbol shows the plant went through an extensive trial and was evaluated highly on quality, texture, or taste. This program gears toward home gardeners however, growers that sell produce at farmers’ markets utilize these cultivars. The program enlists trialing sites to evaluate new or unsold varieties and recommends if they have what it takes to hit the market. The organization has been around since 1932, and some of its earliest winners are not considered heirlooms, such as Blue Lake 274 bush beans.ĪAS is the oldest nonprofit horticulture trialing and evaluation organization in North America. If you know about the AAS program, you may wonder why I am mentioning it in this article since they also award hybrids in addition to open-pollinated varieties. When deciding on which varieties to grow, I suggest considering plants that have been tested by All America Selections (AAS). Also, if you struggle with plant problems, look for types that are resistant to or tolerant of common pests and diseases. As you scan the pages to decide what to plant next season, think of your planting site, whether it’s in a container on your patio, a backyard garden, or in your landscape.
